Are Diet Foods Making Your Children Fat?

One in three children are overweight, or about 25 million American children, and these numbers are increasing. In fact, only in the last 30 years the number of overweight children has doubled. Fifty years ago, only a small percentage of the population had problems with their weight.

 We now have an epidemic, even in children. This is very serious because overweight as a child can lead to type 2 diabetes, heart disease and many other health problems.

While many are quick to blame inactivity and watching TV and playing video games, with simple overeating for this increase, I think there's another factor involved. The increase of childhood obesity also happened when we significantly increased the number of diet, low-fat foods in our diet, including diet sodas, fat-free potato chips, low resistance dishes fat and more.


 Around the turn of the century, there was no dietary foods, and eat more fat, including more butter and cream and red meat, and very few people were overweight. And unless they were still obese. So what happens? Should buy their children food diet low in fat to help lose weight?

According to an article in the journal "Obesity," published in August 2007, researchers found that when children eat low-calorie versions of foods that are high in calories, overeating is made and leads to obesity.  


The lead author of the study, David Pierce, said that "on the basis of what (we) have learned, it is better for children to eat a healthy, well balanced diet with sufficient calories for their daily activities rather than low-calorie snacks or meals. "

While eating foods from the diet can also lead to obesity and poor health for adults, it seems that for children, another factor going on. It seems that the use of diet drinks and other diet foods at an early age seems to be conditioned to want to eat more, because you can eat more foods from the diet with fewer calories.  


Another study from the University of Massachusetts corroborates this. A link between food soda consumption and increased risk of obesity was found, with rates of heart disease and higher diabetes.

Eat well-balanced meals rather than diet food


Although the above study used rats, no children, researchers believe that young animals are already made to overeat when given foods low in calories and drink per day, that is directly applicable to our children. As we have seen, obesity rates are high and rising even among young people.  


Mr. Pierce recommends using outdated ways to keep their children healthy and fit and eating well-balanced meals and exercise regularly. He admits that "diet foods are probably not a good idea for young growing."

We fully agree. We must return to real food for children and adults, and cut dietary foods, low fat foods, packaged foods and fast foods. We should eat whole fruits, vegetables, meat and dairy products from animals fed on grass and whole grains.  


You must remember that children grow and need more calories than an adult size. You do not want them to eat a low calorie diet, especially not a low fat diet. Children need good quality fats for their brains and reproductive growth in particular.

In addition to real food again, it is also true that watching too much television or playing video games instead of outdoor exercise is bad for all of us, and children are no different. Set a good example for them and encourage any outdoor activity on most days with exercise yourself.  


This, combined with real food, help their children achieve and maintain a normal healthy weight.
